The Canton Week – September 14th 2026

Welcome to the Canton Week, your go-to source for local news, community updates, and market insights right here in Canton. Here’s what’s making headlines in our city this week.

Mayor Vetoes Ball Ground Highway Annexation and Rezoning, Council Takes It Up September 17
Mayor Bill Grant issued vetoes on September 11 of two City Council approvals covering approximately 48.192 acres along Ball Ground Highway and Fate Conn Road. The two actions are case ANNX2605-011, an annexation, and case RZON2605-010, a rezoning. Grant said this is the first time he has exercised the veto authority granted to the mayor under the City Charter. He based the decision on the approvals conflicting with the city’s adopted Comprehensive Plan, and he called for coordinated planning among Canton, Ball Ground and Cherokee County for the Ball Ground Highway corridor. The City Council is scheduled to discuss the vetoes and take possible action at its meeting on Thursday, September 17 at 6 p.m. at Canton City Hall, 110 Academy Street.

Council Approves 199-Home Lennar Neighborhood in Pearidge
The Canton City Council voted 4 to 2 to approve a request from Lennar Georgia, LLC to annex land on Old Shoal Creek Road, Honeydew Drive, Douglas Ridge Lane and Reinhardt College Parkway into the city and rezone it for a 199-unit single-family neighborhood in the Pearidge community. The neighborhood’s density is 1.12 units per acre. The approval carried 20 conditions covering landscaping buffers, open space and sidewalk connectivity, along with a cap holding the share of homes that may be leased or rented at any one time to 5 percent. Planning and Zoning Manager Thomas Trawicki briefed city leaders on the proposal in August. Councilmembers Travis Johnson and Farris Yawn voted against the motion.

Riverfest Returns to Etowah River Park September 26 and 27
The 42nd annual Riverfest Arts and Crafts Festival runs Saturday, September 26 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, September 27 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Etowah River Park, 600 Brown Industrial Parkway in Canton. The Service League of Cherokee County presents the festival and expects more than 25,000 patrons across the weekend. The grounds hold over 150 arts and crafts exhibitors along with 10 to 20 concessionaires. A children’s area offers games, bouncy houses, a petting zoo and train rides, and there is a separate sports tailgating section. All proceeds support Cherokee County children in need.
